Winter can be a tricky time if you suffer from eczema. While some people see improvements in their eczema as the weather cools down, for others, it can lead to dreaded itch-scratch cycles.
We all know that colder temperatures and drier air cause the skin to lose moisture more quickly. And for eczema-prone skin that already struggles with retaining moisture, it becomes even more crucial to remember to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! But did you know that there are other triggers that can make eczema worse during winter? Keep an eye on these five factors to help keep eczema at bay during the colder weather:
Overheated indoor spaces: Our homes and bedrooms are cozy with heating during winter, but for eczema, the constant changes in humidity and temperature can stress the skin that's already struggling. Keep indoor spaces, especially bedrooms, cool and remove a layer of clothing when coming indoors to minimize temperature changes.
Itchy-scratchy clothing and sheets: With more layers of clothing, even natural materials like wool can trigger itching for those with eczema. Always make sure that the layer closest to the skin is lightweight cotton. Instead of wearing thick clothing, layer up and remove layers as needed to avoid overheating. It's better to be slightly cool than to risk overheating the skin.
Lack of sunshine or vitamin D: Vitamin D plays a significant role in skin health, and during winter, spending more time indoors means our bodies may not be getting enough. So, make sure to get some time in the sunshine and keep your vitamin D levels up.
Not drinking enough water: This is a big one! Colder temperatures can make us, and especially our little ones, feel less thirsty. But drinking less water means our skin can become dehydrated, making eczema-prone skin more prone to flare-ups. Stay hydrated by keeping a water bottle in sight and taking frequent sips.
Not eating enough fruits and vegetables: It's like Mum always says :) Even during winter, it's important to include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. They provide essential nutrients for your skin's health so, don't forget to incorporate a good portion of fruit and vegetables into your meals.
